Today, on April 1st, Monash University is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking ‘FODMAP Hypothesis’ publication.
The term ‘FODMAP’ was first introduced on April 1st, 2005, by Monash University researchers. Professor Peter Gibson and Dr. Sue Shephard published their landmark paper proposing that certain fermentable carbohydrates might contribute to Crohn’s Disease development.
Following this publication, Monash University’s research team investigated FODMAP restriction in IBS patients, which led to the development of their signature 3-step FODMAP diet. The diet’s success in managing IBS symptoms has been validated by research institutions worldwide.
During IBS awareness month this April, Monash University will highlight the dedicated researchers who have contributed to advancing FODMAP research over the past two decades.
